The WEED WILDLIFE REFUGE & BOTANICAL GARDENS project is the vision of community members in Weed, California who share the common goal of providing jobs, education, and plant and wildlife conservation through the display of plants, local natural resources and cultural interpretation. The WWR&BG organization was created as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation with the purpose of developing and managing the Weed Botanical Gardens Project. One of the goals of this organization is to improve the local economy of Siskiyou County by creating a new, successful, eco-friendly industry that provides good quality, meaningful middle-income jobs.
The Project has been planned to showcase our local horticulture and the region's natural biological characteristics. The core of the project is the Garden Center which also includes the following elements: Indoor Exhibit Area; Retail Facilities; Conference and Education Facilities; Green Houses; a Wedding/Reception Area; and a multipurpose Kitchen.
This core area will be supplemented by a number of other garden areas highlighting various plant species connected by pathways, observation and viewing areas, an amphitheater, and interpretive exhibits that highlight the cultural history of the area. Another important feature of the Gardens is a small lake which will cover about 3 acres of the site. As a goal the lake will be natural in appearance, and will have its own water source keeping levels relatively constant over the seasons. This lake and the braided streams that serve it will be man made. It is anticipated that migrating waterfowl will experience a hospitable stopover at the lake. The Gardens will be located West of I-5 near the South Weed exit.
